Day 11, Clovis New Mexico to Amarillo Texas
Wednesday, September 21, 2011 Category: Bike Ride
We have covered approximately 1260 miles in the past 11 days. What a trip!! Today, looking at the weather before we left, the forecast was for NE winds, just in the direction we were heading. And it was a good head wind!!! I didn’t see much scenery, because I was busy looking at the wheel in front of me. For about 90+ miles, we had a pace line with 4 riders (see the picture of our pace line), which made working with the wind somewhat manageable. When you are in a pace line, you have to be very careful that you are not overlapping the bike in front of you, otherwise you might just end up crashing, as did one of our riders (not in our pace line, thank goodness). Happily, there wasn’t much interesting scenery to be seen - mostly very flat, farming country. The road again was a 4 lane divided highway with a reasonably good shoulder to ride on.
I got my second flat in Hereford, Texas. This was flat number 2 on the ride. So far, I have been lucky in this regard. Flats are just another inconvenience that has to be dealt with. Thank goodness for CO2 pumps. They are magic!!
Arrived in Amarillo at the Big Texan around 4:30 pm. Did the usual clean up of bike, clothes, and self. Then, everyone headed over to the Big Texan steakhouse for a wonderful dinner. The pictures for today show the groups enjoying dinner.
It was not an easy day, but none of the days so far have been easy. Tomorrow is supposed to be an easy day, but the forecast is for AM showers. 93 miles with only 800 feet of climbing. Sounds like one of the easier days, but the rain can make it interesting. Regardless, I look forward to tomorrow’s ride. After tomorrow, we move into Oklahoma.
