Day 5, Cottonwood Arizona to Winslow Arizona

Well, this day is over, and I am thankful!  111 miles, with 7000 feet of climbing.  There was a long, steep, tough grade outside of Cottonwood.  I had more difficulty with this climb, just because of the grade, steepness, and probably not recovering from the three major climbs yesterday.  However, I persevered and made the climb.  Just about all of the climbing was done by lunch time at mile 65.6.

Lunch was wonderful.  Great pasta with meatballs, and a number of other choices.  I can’t say enough good about how Pactour handles all of the support for this ride!  Lon Haldeman and Susan Notorangelo have this down pat!  I am so glad that I decided to go with them for this ride!

After lunch, the ride was essentially downhill into Winslow.  We had an awesome tailwind with the downhill, and there were several miles where I did not even pedal!  We managed to average 15.7 mph which is pretty respectable considering today’s mileage.

For dinner, Susan shuttled folks downtown to the La Posada hotel for dinner.  The La Posada is a pretty ritzy place, as you can see by the pictures of the meals.  We definitely had good meals with excellent company.  The riders on this tour are awesome people!

After dinner, I had to go and take a picture of the guy standing on the corner in Winslow AZ.  This comes from the Eagle’s song “Take It Easy”.   ...Well, I’m standing on a corner in winslow, arizona  And such a fine sight to see It’s a girl, my lord, in a flatbed Ford slowin’ down to take a look at me...  Just had to take in some local color Happy

Tonight, I am sore, especially my quads.  I have a sore rear end, and fortunately the feet are not bothering me as much as at the beginning of the ride.  So far, we have ridden 561 miles in 5 days.  That is a lot of time in the saddle.  Tomorrow, if I am not too tired, I might take a stab at figuring out just how many hours.

Tomorrow, the ride will be 121 miles with 4350 feet of climbing, unfortunately near the end of the ride.  Looks to be another challenging day.  For now, need to take some advil and get some sleep.

By the way, Pactour is also putting up photos of the ride.  You can see these photos by going to
