Missing the summer
Sunday, August 28, 2011 Category: Bike Ride
My summer at Philmont Scout Ranch will be over in 3 days, and it is a bittersweet ending to an awesome summer. Over 23,000 Scouts and Scouters experienced a “wilderness experience that will last a lifetime”, thanks to the work of a magnificent staff of over 1,000. I had an opportunity to meet and make many new “Philfriends” this summer, and it is very sad see them leave. There is but a handful of people left, and Philmont has turned into a lonely place. As usual, I had an awesome summer, and the memories of this place will last forever.
My training rides are near the end here in Northern New Mexico. Since this is my last day off, I took a ride out to the NRA Whittington Center near Raton, New Mexico. The ride was a 70 mile round trip, and I thoroughly enjoyed the ride through the New Mexico Highlands. The pictures in the “Training Ride” photo album show some of the scenery on Highway 64. Today’s ride allowed me to think about all of the rides this summer, and how much I will miss them. The rides have given me the opportunity to see the sunrise almost every morning. The things I will miss the most are the great scenery, the awesome New Mexico sunrises, and my two good riding partners, Steve Nelson and Karl Sitzberger. I have greatly enjoyed the companionship and all of the discussions during our rides together. Thank you Steve and Karl!
I have three more rides before I leave on Wednesday, and I will try to make the most of the rides. It won’t be long before I will be in San Diego for the beginning of the “Epic Journey”, and my excitement is building! Now, some last minute packing and details when I arrive back in Albuquerque on Wednesday....
