Day 6, Winslow Arizona to Springerville Arizona

Well, we made it to Springerville AZ today.  121 miles and 4350 feet of climbing.  Thankfully, no large climbs, only long rolling ups and downs for the most part.  It was a tough haul, going so far.  The ride left Winslow and headed over to Holbrook, before turning and heading to St. Johns, AZ.  The first part of the road was flat and it certainly looked like we were out in the middle of no where!  And we were!  The scenery was flat, and eventually turned into more rolling terrain.  Everything was so green, since this area has probably received a lot of rain.

The second rest stop was right at the entrance of the petrified forest, so lots of tourist places where we stopped.  After leaving there, we eventually got to the town of St. Johns, and it looked like we were going to head into a rather large storm.  But after going through St. Johns, we made a turn to the southwest and didn’t get hit by any rain.  Although there was plenty of rain in the area.  It is amazing how fast the clouds and storms can change out here.

Lunch was awesome today!  Hamburgers with all kind of fixin’s, and mine had guacamole and green chile!!  That was the last stop on the road before heading into Springerville.  The last 10 miles were hard, since I was plenty tired.  We move a little slower today, since my riding partner Jamie’s knee was giving her problems.  But we prevailed and made it into Springerville.

Another riding isssue is the wind.  We have had lots of wind this trip, and it has come from all directions.  But like the rain, flats, soreness, etc., you learn very quickly to deal with these.  The wind doesn’t bother me nearly as much as it used to, but I will chock that up to dealing with conditions on this trip.

Had a great dinner tonight with other tour participants and staff.  Again, what a great bunch of people!

Tomorrow will be the longest day of the tour, going from here to Socorro, NM.  The ride will be 157 miles, with a moderate amount of climbing, mostly at the beginning of the ride.  I certainly need to get some sleep tonight, so I will be ready for this trip.  More tomorrow.
