Day 18, Arkadelphia Arkansas to Monticello Arkansas

Tonight, we find ourselves in Monticello Arkansas.  Lots of places to eat along this stretch of road by our Super 8 hotel.  Monticello is on the very eastern edge of Arkansas.  Monticello is an older city, with the first courthouse being built here in 1851.  Several civil war skirmishes were fought around this area.

Tomorrow, we cross the mighty Mississippi river into the state of Mississippi, where we will spend two nights (Indianola, and Kosciusko) before moving on to Alabama.

The weather for today’s ride was sunny with temperatures around the upper 80s to low 90s.  The morning temperature in Arkadelphia was in the 50s, just like most days on this trip.  We are expecting good weather for most of the rest of the ride.

In just 8 days, we should be rolling into Tybee Island, GA for the end of the trip.  We have been on the road now for a total of 18 days.

The ride today was fairly easy (relatively speaking, of course!), with gentle rolling hills along most of the route.  We went through a number of small towns in this part of rural Arkansas.  The ride was approximately 98 miles.  It was interesting that we were chased by a number of dogs (as many days).  Fortunately, none have caught us so far.

There is a lot of logging going on in this part of Arkansas.  We saw many logging trucks, clear cut forests, and a very large sawmill, with lots of trucks waiting to be off loaded.  Along with the clear cutting, we saw lots of places that had been replanted with new trees.  So far, the scenery has been great!

I am not sure about the distance of tomorrow’s ride, since we are changing locations for the original plan.  Instead of staying in Belzoni MS, we are going to be staying in Indianola MS.  This due to a problem with our hotel reservations in Belzoni.

I am looking forward to our move into Mississippi.  I haven’t spent much time there, other than when I was stationed at Keesler AFB in Biloxi Mississippi many years ago.

More to follow tomorrow....
