Pre-ride readiness

The alarm clock rings at 3:45 am, as it has for most of the summer.  After checking email, something to eat and a cup of coffee, I begin to prepare myself for the morning ride.  I am out the door at 4:45 am, well before sunrise (which is about 6:05 at present).  The morning is dark and I am surrounded by the morning chill.  Thank goodness for the bright light on the bicycle!  I ride highway 21 into the town of Cimarron, and make a right turn on highway 64.  I head east toward Raton and ride out as far as I have time for, before turning around.  I return with just enough time for a shower and room cleanup before heading off to work.  The ride takes me out into the remote plains of northern New Mexico, with awesome scenery.  I witness the sunrise each morning on the ride, and some have been quite spectacular.  Usually, I encounter only a handful of cars, which makes the ride most pleasant.  On most of the rides, I am accompanied by my good friend and riding partner, Steve Nelson.  We have solved many world problems on our rides!  On some days, I have the chance to ride in the evening, but lately, the summer monsoons have dampened this event.  I am truly hoping that what I have put into my rides will help me be prepared for the “Epic Journey”....
