Day 10, Roswell New Mexico to Clovis New Mexico
Tuesday, September 20, 2011 Category: Bike Ride
This morning started off with a group picture taken (see the photos). What a great group of riders! It is such a pleasure to be on this trip with so many wonderful people who really love cycling!
We left Roswell this morning at around 7:30 am. After riding through the town, we turned on to Route 70 north and stayed on this rode until reaching Clovis. The road was straight, and very long. There were some gradual uphill climbs, but not much of any consequence. The highway was a 4 lane divided highway with a great shoulder as you can see from the picture above. The scenery didn’t change much for the first part of the ride, being mostly flat, high desert range land. Later in the ride, around Portales and Clovis, there was much more farm land, but still flat. Except for the last few miles, we had a favorable wind that pushed us along nicely.
We have gone approximately 1149 miles in the last 10 days. It almost seems like a blur, but what a great way to see the country. We have passed through some awesome, spectacular country with the Southwestern United States! We are leaving the high mountains behind, and should see some different scenery in the coming days. Tomorrow,we will arrive in Texas, and it should be a fairly flat day. Of course, I always worry about headwinds, but as I have mentioned, we just have to deal with that. Our destination is Amarillo (flat and usually windy), and I have been there many times. I like the town and should have a good meal tomorrow at the Big Texan. Gee, I wonder if any of our crew will go for the 72 oz steak?? Speaking of steaks, I almost feel like I am gaining weight on this ride, but that doesn’t make much sense to me, since I am expending large amounts of calories on these rides. Maybe it is just in my head, but somehow, I feel like the clothes are getting a little tighter. I’ll have to see what these rides do to me when I get back home.
So far, I have really enjoyed this trip. I would recommend Pactour to anyone that would like to take a serious, long distance bike trip. Can’t say enough good about the organization and the people supporting our ride.
We have some people that will be leaving the tour tomorrow, and some others that will be joining us. Sorry to see some of the folks leave. They have been great to ride with. More tomorrow....
