Day 13, Shamrock Texas to Weatherford Oklahoma
Friday, September 23, 2011 Category: Bike Ride
Today, we reached a milestone - we are half way in days, and over half way in miles. So far, we have traveled 1,460 miles in 13 days, and have climbed a total of 52,880 feet!
Today’s ride took us out of the state of Texas and into Western Oklahoma along the historic route 66. The weather was awesome! Sunshine and a good tail wind. What a great day for a ride! We rode over a lot of concrete slab highways mixed with some asphalt roads. We made a stop in Elk City to visit the National Route 66 museum. The museum featured all types of displays and was a great attraction for us to visit.
At our lunch stop, we celebrated the half way point in miles. Lunch as usual was great! For dessert, we had “Half Way” cupcakes (see photo).
After lunch we rolled into Clinton, OK and stopped to visit another Route 66 museum, this time being the “Oklahoma Route 66 museum”. Another great stop to visit.
Today, our team consisted of myself, Jamie Cheney, and Bob Enright. Bob had a little bad luck, and had two flats. Unfortunately, in our haste to get back on the road, Bob didn’t thoroughly check the inside of the tire, and it turns out that there was a nice piece of metal embedded in the tire. That caused the second flat. So after removing the offending piece of metal, and fixing the flat, we were back on the road again.
After reaching the hotel, I made contact with my very good friend Alvin Williams (lives in Clinton, OK). Alvin came by and took me to a Mexican restaurant for dinner. We had a nice visit and it was so good to see Alvin again! Thanks for dinner and the atomic fireballs, Alvin.
Tomorrow, we head southeast to Purcell, OK. This is a part of Oklahoma I haven’t seen before. As a matter of fact, the rest of the ride will be very new country for me to see. I am looking forward to seeing this part of the country.
More tomorrow....
