Day 8, Socorro New Mexico to Ruidoso New Mexico
Sunday, September 18, 2011 Category: Bike Ride
Unfortunately, when I got ready to do the daily blog, I discovered that I had left the computer charger in my hotel room in Socorro. So, I should have a new charger when I get to Clovis NM the day after tomorrow. It is a long sad story, and I hope it works out, otherwise I might be off the blogosphere.
Today, the ride was 106 miles with 6700 feet of climbing. After yesterday’s ride, I thought that I might not be able to finish this ride today. There were a number of climbs, but the worst was after leaving Carizozo heading to Ruidoso. There was 1 large, steep climb, and then some rather large rollers, and then a steep climb after mile 100 to get into Ruidoso. But I made it!! Sure am tired!
After leaving Socorro, we rolled along through the flat farm lands in the Rio Grande valley, heading south. We were chased by about 4 dogs on this part of the ride. Fortunately, they were not able to get us! After the flat farm land, we started doing a gradual climb into high desert terrain. Our first stop was at the historical marker pictured above. From here, you could see the road and it was long and straight. After some time, we climbed some, and then eventually ended up in Carizozo, NM for lunch. The last 25 miles of the day were brutal for me! Lots of climbing after being so beat! I think yesterday took its toll on me physically. Regardless, we made it into Ruidoso. What a beautiful town! It is a mountain town in the Lincoln National Forest, and it looks like a mountain town!
Tomorrow should prove to be much easier. 97 miles with only about 2800 feet of climbing, which should come early in the ride. As a matter of fact, the next few days should be easy, since we are leaving the southwestern mountains for more flat land. I am looking forward to these days!!
Well, more tomorrow if my battery holds out....
