First day in San Diego
Saturday, September 10, 2011 Category: Bike Ride
Yesterday after lunch, I started on the drive from Albuquerque to Phoenix. The weather was cloudy with scattered rain showers the whole way. In fact, there was so much hail in spots between Flagstaff to Phoenix, that it looked like it had snowed! I concluded the drive from Phoenix to San Diego around 9:00 am this morning. On the drive, I drove through El Centro and actually drove part of my first day’s trip in reverse. All I can say is interesting bike riding terrain! I will, of course, have more to say about that tomorrow!
I checked in and met Susan Notorangelo and Lon Haldeman, along with a number of other riders. I also met Bob Clarke, my roommate for the ride. We will be sharing a room at each stop along the ride. Both Bob and I took a leisurely ride to the beach near Mission Bay. Pretty windy here in San Diego, and of course, when I arrived, there was the usual California coastal marine layer (reminded me of why we moved from California years ago).
In the afternoon, we had a riders meeting. There are lots of rules to adhere to, but all for very good reasons. Having managed and done many long distance bike rides, Lon and Susan have this down pretty well. Now, all I have to do is to make sure I remember all of this! Following the rider’s meeting, we had a wonderful dinner of Italian cuisine, followed by good conversations at the dinner table. This is a terrific group of friendly people, and it is easy to tell that they all love cycling.
Tomorrow starts the big day........
