Day 9, Ruidoso New Mexico to Roswell New Mexico
Monday, September 19, 2011 Category: Bike Ride
Today, we went over 1000 miles total mileage (1040) for the ride in 9 days. Very significant total. We are essentially 1/3 of the way done.
We left Ruidoso this rather chilly morning, and in doing so, left the mountains. Soon, we were riding in high desert country, and eventually in high desert open range country. It was a beautiful day for riding, no rain in the forecast, and very sunny along the ride. Lots of rolling hills with many ups and downs. We stopped for lunch around 70 miles, with the wind blowing pretty hard. After lunch, we had to ride the rest of the ride with a good head and side wind. Not pleasant by any means, but you do what you have to do. I mentioned before that you really have to learn to deal with all of the problems that come up when riding. Wind, rain, flats, soreness, etc. It really doesn’t matter, because you still have to roll on. Roswell was a welcome site and it was even pretty flat here!! Rolled in around 3:30 -4:00 pm and took care of the usual stuff that needed to be done - washing the bike, me, and my clothes.
I had a pleasant meal at a mexican food restaurant with my roommate Bob Clarke. This might be the last of the good mexican meals, since I always wonder how the meals will be outside of New Mexico. However, I am looking forward to have a mexican dinner with my friend Alvin Williams when we arrive in Weatherford OK.
The next few days should be reasonably flat, but I am expecting wind... I have been to Amarillo, TX many times, and it has always been windy there. I really hope that I am wrong about this, but we shall see. Look forward to eating at the Big Texan in Amarillo.... More to come tomorrow.
